Magnifying Christ

I was given advice that The Scott Mission Camp was more "charismatic" by Jessie when she found out that I go to a Chinese baptist church. I wasn't too sure what to expect but prayed that the camp would be Christ-exalting, the teaching true to the Bible, and preach the Gospel.

Thanks be to God...I was not disappointed. Once I stepped onto camp ground, I heard the Boys' Section Head Counselor listening to Shai Linne's Christian rap! I knew that was a good sign =P Okay...that aside, I heard the Gospel preached over and over again, and the staff in particular those who were teaching Bible lessons, always dug deep into the Bible and pointed us to Christ.

I was amazed at the many faithful and true witnesses of Christ. And some instances included people speaking in tongues and some interpreting. There was a huge emphasis on the Holy Spirit though, in some of the worship songs.

I think this sermon speaks to the baptism of the Holy Spirit on the passage from John 1:25-34:
They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The main reason we need the baptism of the Holy Spirit—the great outpouring of the Spirit, the great immersion of every part of our lives in the Spirit—is because God’s aim in every part of our lives is the glory of Jesus Christ. Is your life magnifying Christ in every part? If not, pray, as I do so often, for a fresh, fuller baptism in the Holy Spirit. O Holy Spirit, come. O risen Christ, for your great name’s sake, grant us a fresh baptism in your Holy Spirit. (John Piper)
